The first card reading I ever had was around December 2017, with a lovely psychic medium I’d met the year before at a networking event. I’d been having intuitive readings with another lady every year or so, whenever I was feeling stuck and needed a new perspective on things, but had no idea what a card reading would be like.

It’s funny, the first thing she said before she began reading my cards was, “I’m being told that you can do this just as well as me; you don’t need me to read for you, you can one hundred per cent do this yourself.” I was surprised but didn’t really believe that I could, and very jokingly said, maybe I’ll get to study with you one day! She said that I’d find a teacher closer to home when I was ready (she was an hour drive from me), but when I left, heart full of joy for the reading I’d just received, I never gave learning tarot another thought for the next few years.

By mid-2019, I had a growing sense that things were changing – for me, the world, I didn’t know exactly, but I knew that I, personally, was ready for it. I’ve never been one to stay in one place, doing the same thing for years at a time. I crave learning and growth, but was feeling remarkably like one of my houseplants that had outgrown its pot, roots peeking through holes at the bottom in its search for space to continuing growing.

Usually I’d look for something yoga-related to study, but that strong sense of change was pushing me to try something new, and for once, something that was simply for the fun of it and not work-related. I wanted to get out of my comfort zone of yoga studios and yoga people, and have that feeling of being in the unknown territory of something completely different, that I knew nothing about!

I can’t remember exactly how it came about, but I’d had vague thoughts about a mediumship or tarot class as I’d always been interested in “all that”. Opened Facebook one day, and the first ad just happened to be for a psychic mediumship development class at a spiritual centre not far from me! I felt a jolt when I saw the event, really excited, and even though I wondered how on earth I’d be able to do anything like that, I was seeking change, a new adventure, so just had to sign up!

The first reading I ever did was amazing (I’ll tell you about it in another blog). I had zero expectations of myself to get any useful or relevant information, so I just did everything set by step, as guided by the teacher, and was rather shocked when I was right about it all! Several months later, we tried tarot cards. Just as before with my first mediumship reading, everything I said was right for the lady I was reading for, and I was hooked!

Mediumship and tarot readings are very different; they have different purposes. While I’m continuing to develop my mediumship, I do feel more drawn to tarot at the moment. It feels so natural to me, and so similar to how I work anyway: the things that come up in the course of a reading are exactly what we explore when I’m working with a reiki or private yoga client. It might seem like a random deviation from yoga and reiki, but the tarot is actually just another way to help clients identify what’s holding them back, and figure out a better way to move forward.
